I had a '97 Aero 5 speed stock that ran very well. In fact I would say exceptional. I currently have a '97 CSE auto which I have modified. Based upon my experience with these two vehicles I would approach in the following way and add to suit your driving.
1. Check to make sure all vac hoses and assorted valves and controls that operate the turbo and related systems, including the DI cassette are functioning properly. Do some high speed adaption runs to assure the car is running at peak performance....THEN...in order.. I would
2. Put suspension and sway bar bushing on. See Abbott Racing web. I have the rear sway bar upgrade that attaches directly the the exisiting one..works well.
3. free flow air filter (ITG, KandN etc.)
4. 3 inch exhaust....turbo back.
5. high flow intercooler. Abbott has the best one...and it fits perfect.
6. Somewhere in here if your car is running as well as my stock '97 you will be asking yourself how can I possibly get the power to the ground? Well...LSD is the only answer...and expensive.
7. ECU....Put this thing in your car and expect to rebuild your tranny soon and get lousy gas milage....but, coupled with the previous mods the car will be...probably eqivalent to an STI from 2nd gear to 120 MPH at which point the Saab will have the upper hand to 150+ MPH.
