Sounds like a fun internship.

One question that I've had for quite some time is what does the flow
field inside of the engine compartment look like? Especially, through
the intercooler. If you could get an old hood and put a plexiglass
window in it you might be able to see what the flow field is doing. You'd
probably want to use smoke injection to seed the flow and a high speed camera. You could also do a velocity and temperature survey behind the intercooler if you mounted a traverse system on the dummy hood. With those
tools you might be able to design a better inlet for the intercooler and/or
inlet snorkel.

Do you know what you'll get to play with: LDV, hotwire, pitot probes,
5-hole probes,laser light sheets, high speed cameras, drag and moment balances? How big is the wind tunnel and what is the maximum velocity?

I've done my fair share of experimental fluids and heat transfer for my MS and Phd and I'm sure we could come up with something really exciting.
