Hey Dean (and welcome to Nick Ð you just need to join the Club here now! :) )
The incidence of rust on the older C900 is very rare Ð we have a very good environment (hot and dry) so finding rust on an older Saab is quite hard. That is not to say every old Saab will be rust free, but I guess compared to our Northern bretheren we do have it lucky!
There are still quite a few older Saabs around, but most seem to be retired due to engine problems, gearbox problems, accidents etc. that the owner doesn't have the inclination or spare $ to get fixed. It is getting harder to find decent C900 aeros though.
One good thing I guess is that the older saabs still command a higher price (when compared to similar age/kms) to USA/Canada cars. For example, a 1988 900 Aero (which I drive) in V good condition would be around aud$10,000 to an exceptional model around aud$14,000. I guess this is due to the fact that they were v. expensive to buy in the first place Ð a 1988 900 Aero in that year was aud$69,000 (in 1988 prices that is $$$$$!!!)
Paint is quite easily oxidised on older models Ð especially the red cars.
As an aside, the 2000 903 Viggen convertible sold here for aud$105,000 and the coupe around aud$80,000. You can do the maths to work out in your currency! From that, there were not many sold!
steve :)
