"division amongst Saab owners regarding this modification"
I do not agree that there is a great division. Part of the population does not care about upgrades. Some do care get ECU mods and an SMBC is not even on their radar scope. For those looking for some inexpensive mild performance improvements, the SMBC has little benefit for some folks with automatics, as some automatics are very fast getting onto boost and also benefit from the torque multiplication of the torque converter. So only a sub population of Saab owners cares one way or the other or even knows what a SMBC is.
As for those who disagree, please tell me how many have installed and then removed prefering to run stock. If some then progress to a hot ECU, then perhaps the SMBC was a sensible stepping stone for the undecided.
As for technical objections: It does allow one to easily and safely raise the base boost. Nothing to argue about there. It does increase responsiveness... quite a bit for manual gear box applications. No argument there. It will allow one to increase peak boost by a small amount. But the SMBC is not meant to be a MBC and for those who jack up the peak boost, the ECU and motorized throttle body will fight that. It was never intended that folks do that, but how can we stop someone from turning a screw. Yes, if over adjusted, there are thermal effects to the throttle trying to reduce the manifold boost. But that is not a situation that should occur. That is not a technical issue, but a educational problem. Anyways, as base boost is increased and kept below peak boost, the vehicle runs faster and any effect of the ECU fighting these pressures feels to be non existant or limited. One also needs to adjust below the point where the TCS light indicates that the throttle is fighting wheel slip. So there is another limit that someone might be ignorant enought to ignore. And any throttle fighting of boost for a MBC adjusted to at or below base boost will will have any such effects limited to the duration of a run in 1st or 2nd gear, which is by defintion time limited. For 3rd gear and up, it appears that one can increase the peak boost by a small amount without the ECU suddenly over reacting to the pressure. There is a pressure tolerance, but I don't know what that is. So I feel that if someone takes a SMBC and misuses it, then an analysis of whats then going wrong is missing the point entirely. A discussion of thats technically not great that is then going on misses the point. The point in that situation is not technical, but operator error. The SMBC was never intended to be a MBC to jack up boost as high as possible. So perhaps we can focus on your SMBC issues a bit more appropriately. A SMBC needs to be used in moderation. And of someone tries to see how high they can get the boost indicator bumping up near limp home events, then that is not a technical problem, even though there are technical implications.
