I drove the Slut up to Jak's house last week for some expert help. (Thanks Jak!) Anyway, Jak R&R'd the timing chain and removed the balance shaft chain per my request in about 1/8th the time in would have taken me. Everything is clean and buttoned up nicely now, and I have come to some conclusions about balance shafts;
If your car is being built strictly for track purposes, I would remove them. If you are a 50k miles + highway warrior like myself, then by all means, keep the shafts and chain. I personaly feel that the progressively louder roar at 2,800 and up is really hard to ignore at highway speeds, especially on a long drive. I guess I didn't realize how unbelievably smooth and refined my B234 was until the balance shafts were deactivated. Maybe my motor is a little less balanced than others or something, but I still don't know how people can make the claim that the engine vibration doesn't feel any different with the chain removed. IMHO, it's rather dramatic with poly mounts. I went back to my OE mounts this past weekend hoping to regain some refinement, but it didn't make that much of a difference. I understand that the chain is good up to 400BHP and if this is true, I'm gonna reinstall the balance chain. If you are blueprinting and balancing then the results might be different. I will tell you this Ed, I have heard that the engine vibration on B235 is far more significant than on the 234 and 204. This might have more to do with the suspension and mounting in the 9-5, but something worth looking into anyway. Good luck on the motor and much respect for taking on the 235 piston issue. :o)
