you need an engine cradle to hold up the back of the engine because you have to drop the subframe I leave the ball joints & axles atached & just let it hang down
when you get the pan off you will see there is a windage trey in there bolted down with I think 5 torx & under that the pickup screan
just pull the screan & scrape it & blow air thru it & run brake clean thru it
then take a pick tool & starting from the center poke larger holes in the screan somewhat symetrically for mabey an inch& a half diameter
what happens is the screan is so fine that the normal acumulation of particulates which when small would pulled up by the pump & be deposited in the oil filter & at that point are of no harm canot get thru the screan so like the palnets were formed milenia (or whatever) ago thjey gather together making larger & larger particles which eventualy plug the screan up & starve the engine for oil
this is a common occurrance unfortunatly
some of the carbon formation is due to parafin coking in the oil & some is particulates blown past the rings
so Id say good quality oil changed at 3000 mile intervals is a good idea I think synth is good too but I wouldent go to long change intervals like many do
once the screan is modded the problem is solved
it is too fine a mesh finer than any other Ive seen & Ive seen many
take care
