That's a pretty involved project, fabricating a block. Big bucks. A friend of mine was involved in the University of Alberta's Formula SAE project a few years back. At the event in Detroit, he said some universities had done their own blocks too. Nuts.

I think we're fortunate to have such a durable block in the B202. Even Viggen owners should be envious. ;)

IMO, the only reason to do a new block would be weight savings - an all alloy B202 would be quite trick, right up there on the cutting edge of things. Too bad the world of Saab tuning isn't like the world of small and big block 'mercan/Honda/Mitsubishi/Nissan tuning, where one can indeed purchase aftermarket alloy blocks.

Friend of mine brought over his stripped out SR20 block one day. I went to help him lift it but he just picked it up and took it off the minivan's floor... :) Bloody thing probably only weighed like 40-50lbs stripped down!

On another note, there are small Brit companies doing up bike engined based v8s, sub 2.0L displacement. These are way cool, I think. They use existing heads and valve trains from production bikes, but the bottom end is all new. Evo magazine featured an install into a Caterham; Radical is also doing up another unit. 350-380hp was quoted, nuts. The dimensions of these engines apparently are also suitable for other small cars, like a custom install into a Lotus Elise. Evo said the cost would be in the region of 18,000 GBP though. I dream of the F1 soundtrack an engine like that would make...
