the oil tubes would cause the lifters not to pump up & you would get clicking increasing in frequency with RPM
that dosent sound like you
take a piece of fuel hose & put one end in your ear & probe around with the other end where you think you have the exhaust leak
by the way the exhaust manifold gaskets will like move out from under the manifold its the weardest thing & block the port & leak so check that too
an exhaust leak usualy gets worse under load if that helps any
for listening for mechanical noises I use a stethascope but I used to stick the handle of a long screwdriver in my ear (fold the little flap of your ear over the canal & shove the handle against that to hold it closed)
probe around with the blade of the screwdriver to find if it is a bad water pump timing chain rattle or whatever
our engines will make some piston noise cold too a little which quiets up when warmed up (thats why you dont want to flog your car cold the pistons dont fit rite)
