As with all my SPG's I've had in the past, I just did this little modification to my 85 SPG's ignition diaphragm. I've read that the general consensus when bending or filing the stop, is to double the stock gap which is ~1mm. I, however, bent it quite a bit more than that, so that I could advance initial timing more. As it stands now, I run initial timind at 27(!) BTDC, and my timing on boost is at this point unknown (I don't have a vacuum/boost pump to check it), but I get no audible pinging or APC kickback. I'm guessing the on-boost timing is actually pretty advanced, based on how much harder it pulls, but with my lower CR and water injection, it doesn't seem to be a problem. Does anyone see a downside to running initial timing this advanced? Only thing I can think of is that now, at about 2-3 psi, a LOT more retard is dumped into the timing curve, which should translate into a terrible flat spot. To be honest though, I can't notice it much. Oh, and for what it's worth, I got this ignition diaphragm off a 9000, and the part number ends in 010 (I'm assuming this is the stiffer spring model). Sorry for the long post, I just thought I'd share my recent experiences with the subject. Thanks for listening.
