Okay, I've been digging through the archives, and I think the problem is definitely the PCV circuit. When I was cleaning the IAC valve, I was curious about where the (small) PCV hose went after the check valve. It just sort of went about 6 inches and stopped. I've since learned that it's supposed to be connected to the throttle body -- it wasn't. Definitely sounds like a major performance damper. Now that I've thouroughly cracked the whole works into tiny bits, I'll get a fresh new Y fitting, hose, and ($14 !!!) check valve. In the meantime, I'll try and locate the nipple on the TB and cap it off.
Unfortunately, however, I kind of have to deal with the blown head gasket before any more hot-rodding adventures....
