Uh, the spoiler on a hatchback Saab absolutely does have aerodynamic benefits, and I'm reasonably sure the factory spoiler on an XR does as well. The long sloping rear end of a 900 (and the XR) will actually generate lift at high speeds, and the rear spoiler on these cars is designed to counteract that force.
I'm sure you recall a few years back when Audi recalled all the TTs so they could be fitted with spoilers. Without them, the rear got light at speed and made for unstable and potentially dangerous handling characteristics. The same aerodynamic principles apply to most fastback cars, Saabs included. Witness the spoiler fitted to Turbo Beetles, even... The difference at 100mph between a hatch Saab with and without a spoiler is stunning.
On a side note, FWIW, the spoiler is there to help clean the rear window - or so Saab claims. I'm sure this is a side-benefit, but it's a point nonetheless.
I won't speak on the Cosworth wing on the XRs, but rest assured Cosworth would not have gone to the trouble of designing the thing if it didn't serve a purpose. They build competition cars, not show cars.
