Warranty voided by Forge valve

Installed a Forge valve on my '00 9-3 in January. The SES (check engine light) came on last night and the dealer looked at it today. The codes pulled indicated a bad BPV. For the previous 3 months the Forge valve worked flawlessly under all kinds of throttle and liftoff conditions without the SES light coming on. It's possible that the Forge valve has failed, but of course the dealer wasn't go to look at it. They reset it, charged me $51.50 (Cdn funds) and after a small lecture (you wanna play, you gotta pay), sent me on my way. Of course the SES light came on again as I drove out of the dealership. Guess I should have put the old valve back on before going in to the dealer.
Any way to check/reset the codes before I go in next time ? And how do I interpret the codes ? Obviously in a Saab manual somewhere. Canadian Tire sells an OBD2 tool. Anybody had experience with this. Other types ?
