I feel like I'm a fairly conservative driver. When I hear people writing about track racing and how many transmissions they have used up, I shudder.
I leave lots of room between my car and the ones in front. I drive defensively. When switching lanes, I let the guy in the other lane get ahead and drop in behind him.
But, for some reason, last week found my son and I down at SP9 in San Luis Obispo watching Dave Kennedy put a Stage 1 setup in my 94 CE c900 convertible.
This consisted of putting in SP9's AID, to replace my vacuum advance, #24 injectors in place of the stock #21's and Erik P's APC in place of my red box.
We kept the 2.8 fpr that comes stock on the CE's, as Dave thought that was the best match for the injectors.
We spent a pleasant afternoon, Dave did most of the wrenching, but I got to do some.
Then it was time to test out the difference in the car. Dave wanted to watch my boost gauge, so he sat in the back. The road was wet from rains that day.I got to try out WOT.
When it broke loose in 2nd, I started wondering what in #$#%! I was doing. It kept traction up thru the rest of the gears, fortunately.
Boost was only touching the red, but I was feeling a little shaken and said that I thought it seemed like plenty of power. Dave didn't push me.
I drove back to my hotel wondering if maybe I wouldn't be switching back to my old parts.
The next day, driving back to Berkeley, I tested the car out on Cuesta Grade, which is a long 6% grade out of SLO. I hit 1/4 red in 2nd once, but never got past the edge of the red again on the rest of my trip home.
What I found on the drive home was that as soon as I got used to the extra power, it was like driving a 6-cylinder car. I liked the feeling of having some extra zip when passing. We conservative drivers find that makes us feel safer. : )
Just to be sure I was familiar with the new zip, I got off and on the freeway a few times to see how the boost would come on. When I found a good ramp, I doubled back and tried it out again. Just in the interests of knowing how the car would perform.
Now I find myself looking at intercoolers. I mean, if having the car act like a six-cylinder makes me feel safer, then having a car that has the power of my dad's oldsmobile could only be better. What could be more conservative than that?
