Like: Did you purposely run your car lean? Under what conditions? Just 60 plus highway speeds? What happens when you run an engine lean to burn up a piston like that. I'm guessing all the combustion chambers get hot because of less fuel being sprayed in there acting like a thermal cooling shield while cruising, and the piston that burnt up was just the first to go. Also, burnt up means what? The rings warp from the heat?

That must have been a long frustrating drive back, knowing you had a bum engine and wondering if it would make it the whole distance, driving the whole time while listening closely to the engine, driving at minimum speeds, watching temp guages, stopping to check oil levels.

The only experience I have with a blown engine was my 8VT with over 200K when it died while powering up a hill. It began to lose power, then it felt as if I was pulling a trailor. I was but 3 miles from home, half of which was a downhill cruise so I kept powering up the hill, the whole time losing more power with each yard. Once the engine began screeching and I couldn't go faster than 10mph in first gear I pulled over in a safe spot, just 100 yards from the crest of the hill where I could have coasted the rest of the way home. Once the engine cooled I could start it up, but the metal on metal sound was horrific. When I pulled it apart I could see that number 3 piston bottom and the connecting rod were bone dry while the others were a normal oily wet brown. My guess as to what happened was either the oil channel that shoots oil onto #3 piston area from below became blocked, or something similar to what happened with you - it just overheated while powering uphill and my continued driving in the attempt to get home only made it worse.
