There may be some advantages to the later c900 5 spds, but long time rebuilder here in Oregon says they don't seem to be especially better if judged by trans he rebuilds or repairs. One problem he did mention was that the later ones, fewer years available, can be harder to find good rebuildable parts due to fewer available. He doesn't have a lot of experience with cars running extreme add'l power.
My understanding is that your 'tests' of the used trans only verify that it is not 'broken'. You can have pinion 'whine' from a trans that doesn't show noise on the bench. I beleive you can eliminate definitely bad or going bad trans by careful examination of debris on the drain magnet. If there are 'flakes', tiny shiny pieces, as well as the usual grey paste of gear wear, I think it is hard surface failure from either the bearing races or balls. I have seen this and noted it, and the trans started the noises within the year. I occasionally sell a used trans, and this is my only way to advise regarding condition of a fully functional 5 spd. Not sure how to 'inspect' the last series trans without a drain. Maybe pull covers and 'collect' with a magnet?
