I found the stock Audio System 3 in my 1998 900SET to have very poor frequency response. The mid-bass was muddy, the mid-range was lacking, and the high frequencies were buzzy. I upgraded the sound system by installing aftermarket speakers. The NG900 SET stereo system (Audio 3) has the full-range dash and rear speakers driven by the radio amplifier (20W Max. X 4) and the front door speakers driven by a separate mid-bass amplifier, but handling only the frequencies below 200 HZ (40W Max. X 2). My sound system is stock except that the factory speakers have been replaced with Infinity Kappa speakers (Infinity Kappa 32.1cf 3.5 2-way speakers in the dash, Infinity Kappa 693.1i 6 by 9 3-way speakers in the rear parcel shelf, and Infinity Kappa 65.1mb 6.5 mid-bass speakers in the front doors). The stock speakers were of cheap construction and were not a coaxial or full-range design. The Infinity Kappa speakers give much fuller response in the mid-bass and mid-range frequencies and clear definition in the high frequencies.
Other Saabnet posters have stated that they changed to Polk Audio speakers in their vehicles with good results. Similar changes could be made to your Viggen. Also see the NG900/9-3 Audio section in the FAQ section.
