Hello Saabnet guys! Interesting question for those of us who have upgraded to performance 16" wheels on our classic 900 turbo...
I put 16"x 7.5" Borbet wheels on my classic 900 turbo with 205/50-16 tires. The offset is different than stock, plus they are alot wider than stock, but the wheel doesn't sit outside the wheelwell excessively. In fact, the AERO wheels on my buddy's 900T sit outside the wheelswells further than my wheels do with the same tire size! Alot of my wide 7.5" wheel sits toward the inside of the car due to the offset. My tire/wheel combo seems to fit great, no problems with rubbing or anything. BUT, I've had alot of trouble with outter edge excessive tire wear in a very short time even though the allignment is within factory spec since purchasing the tires/wheels. And no, my driving style has not changed. The strange tire wear is an allignment issue confirmed with my tire store and a bodyshop. So, with Camber and castor within spec, I finally got an allignment shop to adjust toe to the very outter limits of spec (.7 on both sides). Most shops don't want to do anything "custom" or "out of factory spec". This helped alleviate the problem alot, but didn't really fix it. I'm thinking that Camber or Castor is off FOR THESE AFTERMARKET WHEELS ONLY. Even with the toe adjusted as stated above, it still feels like I'm driving on the outter 3rd portion of the tire and not fully utilizing the WHOLE width of the tire evenly. It wears normally on the inside and middle of the tire, but I think the actual weight of the car is predominately falling on the outter 3rd of the wheel. It just doesn't handle like it is sitting flat, especially on turns! Does anybody have any experience with this type of thing? I'm sure if I adjusted Camber or Castor, and then toe appropriate to the above, the car would feel like it sat flat on the ground and tire wear would even out. Ideas on where to start with custom adjustments? I'd like to make these wide wheels work on this car because the wide wheel speads the tire width out more and makes the tread wider for handling purposes (which I have yet to really feel due to my allignment issue).
