900 Saab Conv Auto Transmission - are they that bad?

Ok, Ok, I've had 3 Saab 900's with manual transmissions prior to this one & loved them all! What possessed me to get this one...I don't know but I am disgusted with myself.
The performance compared to the 5 speed manual gearbox is disappointing. From first gear, it decides to shift to 2'nd anywhere from 2,600 - 3,400 RPM. Shifting to 3'rd gear, it's also a guess where it will decide to shift. I do realize though that the amount of gas I give it usually determines when it decides to shift. It's like it has a mind of it's own! If I don't give it much gas, it will shift prematurely & bog down some. If I give it a lot of gas, it will sometimes wait to 3,400 RPM which is a higher RPM than I'd like.
Please help...is this typical of a 94 3-speed automatic? Can I have the tranny adjusted to where it shifts on a more consistent basis? Or, is this reflective of a transmission with problems? That would be surprising to me though as the car only has 67K & was very well maintained.
Any input would be much appreciated!
