I think you're totally right about the improved traction on low-friction surfaces, as long as it's a uniformly low-friction surface such as a dirt track, ice racing or a rally on gravel. But I have similar concerns as you do regarding on-road behavior. If one wheel loses grip, say on an ice patch along a street, what's to stop the wheel with traction from pushing the car toward the side without traction?
