Shawn,
Hope all is well with you and your SAAB.
Installation of the 2.3 or 2.1 liter cylinder head to your 1988 SPG would provide a modest improvement in engine performance. The 2.3 liter cylinder head would need to come from the 1991-1993 2.3l 9000 and/or 1991-1993 non turbo 900. All of these variations are identical and would retrofit onto your 1988 without the need for modifications, etc.
If looking for maximum flow and performance, a properly (modified) ported 2.0 liter cylinder head will always outflow a ported 2.1 liter cylinder head and you can do more research on this topic by doing a "search" above under this BB.
Best of luck and regards,
GaryK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
