The damage doesn't look bad enough to keep that engine off the road. But that sure seems like an awful lot of carbon buildup. How long's it been since you cleaned under the head? Do you drive with premium gas only? Got some aging rings on those pistons? Is that perhaps the result of an overworn valve guide? Do you know what your compression was before the recent blow-up? Reminds me I should do a water injection cleaning some time soon.
