john,
Welcome to the wonderful world of the 900!
If you could determine what year this S is or engine designation (8V or 16V) we could prob. be of more help.
Most of the early 900 engines are similar barring camshaft and piston (compression ratio). The early 8V had some early differences with cylinder head/valve assemblies which may have more impact on your turbocharging decision.
We've had multiple users of the 900S convert to turbo with a few salvage parts, additional fueling, and a little time. You could easily see 10 psi charge pressures to your OEM 16V non turbo engine without the need for much in the way of modifications. 15 psi is not uncommon but requires high fuel grade/octane to keep detonation at bay. 20 psi would require a drop in compression ratio and potential camshaft change to limit valve overlap.
The higher compression ratio and increased valve overlap of your non turbo engine provides excellent off boost performance but the valve timing could impact turbocharger response/lag with a more progressive engine update.
Best of luck and regards,
GaryK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
