Good luck and keep us posted.
The 99 board will get more responces for B engine tech questions.
The B engine 900s (78-81) are different animals.
Presuming yours isn't a turbo,
a B turbo engine engine swap will bolt right in.
Any B engine is much faster than any comparable 8v H 900 (81-84).
The cheap suspension upgrade will be night and day.
Get the sway bars and and springs from a post 87 900.
Then cut the springs a little.
I'd go with new Sachs shocks.
Then get alloy wheels off any turbo pre 87 900.
Then put decent tires on there:
say Bridgestone G009 205/50/15.
This setup will give you good handling all the time, not harsh.
This presumes power steering. I prefer manual steering,
but go with 185/65/15 if manual.
All should be cheap, find them at a junk yard yourself,
even if using a mechanic.
You can make the car feel faster by going with 2 separate glass pack
mufflers and no cat. Either a MMS or SAAB oem 2 peice header will also help. You can still get the whole system new for $500 from MSS. If that's to steep look for a used header and then go to a respectable exhauste shop. Have them fabricate pipe and use clamps, no welds. This be cheaper than oem.
Then drill some holes in the airbox and drop in a k&n element.
Make sure your fuel distributor, injectors, warm up regulator, ignition system wiring, and coil are good. Use genuine Bosche parts when availaable, or it'll bite you. Used parts are fine and next to free. If they work, they work. Put in bosche plugs and rotor, beugicord (sp?) wires, redline in tranny. Then change the engine oil every 2500 miles or run mobil 1 for 5k. A 76 fuel distributor swap, will require fuel line fabrication, but will make the engine faster.
Without a turbo or the dual weber setup it'll never be fast,
but signifigantly more fun, and worth it.
Turbo or dual weber swaps are $1-2k in wholesale parts ;( ,
if done correctly.
