You tune most aftermarket ECUs with a laptop, so having the full-size Innovate LM1 separate from the laptop is a bit of a hassle, is unneeded because you can view the signal on the laptop, plus you need to input the sensor signal from the LM1 to the laptop. So the logic is: if you have the laptop there already, and you're datalogging already, why not just display the sensor output on the laptop and datalog with it as well, skipping the LM1 box?
A tuner just needs the sensor, he does not need the LM1 datalogger, in other words.
If you are not using an aftermarket ECU, a handheld unit is the way to go. If all you want is a cool gauge on your car to show air-fuel ratio, I'd have to say it's really overkill to put a wideband on a modestly modified car. Why? Because after you are sure you have good fuel, the sensor will just boringly report whatever your ECU does at all states of power. ECUs work pretty much like clockwork. A wideband gauge will show mixture to be as predictably as a boost gauge shows psi. And if there is ever a problem? Well, if your car has a good knock sensor and boost contrller, you will probably see and feel the boost held back faster than you will notice your fuel ratio is off.
Don't forget the cost to have the bung welded if you are unable to do it yourself.
Hope this helps.
