Potato was sucessfully installed few weeks back and the reason why it was mounted that high was to make place for other components like the A/C compressor etc. Other choice would have been to move the turbo more to the driver side with the help of header design, but this seemed like a good alternative.
The initial goal for this upgrade was to keep the strong bottom end which I had with the previous setup and to maintain the movement up to rev limiter. With std turbo it did not pull that great above 5000 or so.
Also lag minimazation was one goal.
Choice of turbo came down to GT28RS with the smaller turbine, A/R of 0.64. This is not the choice that you usually see mounted into saabs, the bigger turbine with A/R of 0.86 or so seems to be more common.
How did we succeed?
Here is a comparison both before and after upgrade. Table is in form;
Speed in km/h, acceleration time for every 10km/h new set-up, same for old set-up, difference in time, gain or loss in percentage.
90
100 0,79 0,72 -0,07 -10 %
110 0,79 0,80 0,01 1 %
120 0,83 0,84 0,01 1 %
130 0,79 0,92 0,13 14 %
140 0,96 1,16 0,20 17 %
150 0,96 1,32 0,36 27 %
Best ever result for 80-120km/h acceleration with std turbo was 3.0s and with new this dropped to 3.2s, so a slight set back there, but not that bad.
From the figures above we see a huge gain in performace as rpm raise near limiter, in the last interval 140-150 (3rd gear, near limiter) a gain of 27% was seen.
From the airmass curve one can also see the difference. The curves go hand in hand up to 4000rpm after which the orig chargers turbine begins to clog up and its ability to move more airmass is limited. With the new turbo, this is different it does keep going and flow is kept up in a deacent level right up to rev limiter. By looking at the calculated mg/Combustion value = correlates with torque shows that a constant value is held from 2500-5500rpm, while the std charger could only maintain it between 2300-4000
Current SW will need to have a few changes, but everyting looks promising at the moement.
New pistons will eventually find their way into the machine, but when this time comes the turbo will also be tossed and swapped to a bigger one ;)
