I just did this in my 9000 Aero. On the advice of others here, I set the headlight switch to "on", and stuffed it away behind the dash. I then used that open space to install the gauge. The opening was exactly the right size, I just had to dremel away some of the plastic behind the opening which held the switch in place. The best name in gauges is Stewart Warner. (Autometer is more well known, but I think it's mostly marketing hype). I went with a cheaper gauge, it's actually a Timex. I checked it out for accuracy, and it's very good.
Other option is an A-pillar pod, which is mountains more work, and although it can have a professional look, it will not look stock.
