With some encourgement from Jak, I got the whole thing disassembled (aside from getting the plastic speedo gear off the differential, which I still haven't figured out). The following tools are what I'd say are a must (not including your more generic tools):
impact wrench (to get the output shaft nut off)
pullers of various sizes; I needed two different ones but had about 8 to choose from
bench grider (to get those pullers to fit where you need them)
shop press (to remove the differential from the crown gear)
external Torx driver, E14 (for as above)
workmate bench
Will be needed for re-assembly: a dial gauge and stand, new crush sleeve, new gasket, gasket sealer.
I managed not to damage any bearings, though I haven't got the differential bearings off yet. The bearing that the manual says you have to break I got out by pulling not from the bearing, but on the gear underneath the shift fork.
