I have used both. I installed the Hallman about a year ago, and ran with it until the the winter when the cold weather generated boost overshoots that caused fuel cuts. I lowered the boost quite a bit. This was with all of the possible intake and exhaust mods, AND with the boost controller connected into manifold pressure, not the hose barb on the compressor housing.
I tried the Hallman with the compressor connection, and I was satisfied with that.
I put the TurboXS HP unit in place late last fall. Same problems. And with its spring and orifice adjustments, it does present a number of variables!
I have the TurboXS connected to the compressor housing as of last weekend, and I am still dialing it in. The Hallman is faster than the TurboXS with the recommended base bleed setting of two turns open. I changed that to 1.75 turns open last night and it is much better in spool up, and is not overhsooting at 55F with 14PSI of boost. Tonite I will try for 15 15.5 PSI of boost.
But the connection at the compressor hose barb does lead to boost pressure drops at high RPM. That is why a connection to the manifold is better. But that leads to time delays that are a major source of the pressure overshoots.
I will be creating a hole in the top return channel of my intercooler and bonding a fitting to it. This should provide a good intermediate response.
I will be getting a run on a dyno this Saturday. I don't know if I will be getting things done and dialed in ny then. I hate deadlines. But a free dyno day is a free dyno day!
The $35US controllers also seem to be working very well, but I have not had a chance to try one, and will not do so unless someone is willing to loan me one. So it is $129 plus shipping or $35 delivered.
For readers with a TurboXS unit, try closing down the bleeder screw and retuning the boost. You might find the throttle response is sharper.
