How do you propose to judge it "still a Saab?" :-) It's as much a Saab as can be expected compared to other non sports car based drag cars. Special gearset and differential? Common as snow in Sweden at racetracks everywhere. Lexan windows? Stripped interior? Like rice in China. Special body panels? Fiberglass and carbon fiber bits? Common as cabs in Times Square.
For comparinson, most very fast subcompact drag cars - Hondas, Acuras etc - are less "Honda" than the Saab is "Saab": those cars run aftermarket rods, pistons, heads/head bolts/gaskets, sometimes cranks, sometimes intake manifolds, often customized blocks, often aftermarket cams, always aftermarket engine management (or at least hacked Honda stuff, which may as well be aftermarket). Don't forget the custom driveshafts required for Hondas, too. And for turbocharged cars, you have lots of other custom items as well (some pay $1000 or More for just an exhaust manifold!!) As with the Saab, fast subcompacts run some sort of limited slip differential.
The fact is, any non sports car going that fast at the drag strip will have had lots of things done to it. I guess whether or not the Nordic Saab is a "Saab" is a matter of perspective.
Happy Saabing..... :-)
