Jak, you may have solved the riddle as to how my former 82 8 valve turbo engine died on me rather suddenly. When I took the engine out and seperated the tranny, it was obvious what happened - cylinder three oil feed function failed, causing #3 piston and crank bearing to overheat and seize. Everything but that piston and bearing were nice and oily brown whereas #3 was a dry light brown, clearly signs of no oil and overheating. When I checked the turbo condition I was shocked to find so much play both lateral and radial. And it squeeked when I rotated it, suggesting metal on metal. So that may explain what happened: the turbo gave out first and pieces of metal made it's way to the oil feed channel of #3 piston and blocked it. The day before the engine blew, I took a nice long trip along the coast, and the return trip includes a nearly 5 mile long 5 degree uphill climb, most of which is under steady boost conditions if you want to cruise with any speed in 5th gear. If there were any noises which may have given the dying turbo away while driving up that hill, I wouldn't have heard it because of the sound system being turned up.
