Yes, you need a gun feed, otherwise it's like trying to push spaghetti through your lead and you'll have problems.
If you're doing major work TIG is the way to go but for repairs and small stuff gun-fed MIG with good gas will work fine and you can actually make some decent welds that way too.
Back in the day me and another guy built a small alumnium frame BASIC stamp wire guided AGV for our senior engineering project and MIG worked fine for the frame.
