machining 2-3-4 gear - C900 Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
so after spending 2 hours talking with a great local saab guy (demi valtanis, precision plus in philadelphia area), i have this question and proposition.
has anyone taken 2-3-4 gears and asked a machinist to built the exact match, but with many more teeth (sort of like thos on the axles, less depth, more teeth). seems to me demi is right. this would bive MUCH greater strength. it does beg the question about shaft flex, perhaps the shaft flex is a hundh but not a known cause. demi swears it isn't flex that busts the teeth but just weakness in the strenth of the tooth design. i certainly don't know. both sound plausible.
so, we have a machinist that definitely can do it here. but, the proposition is this. how many buyers could we potentially have:
step one: take 93 gears to our machinst. ask for an assessment/price to make one set.
2. take price and ask machinist how much for some number of sets (20?).
3. do a group buy.
im willing to do the legwork. i just was interested in feedback and seegin how much real interest there might be. for me, id pay several grand just for the gears. maybe 3 or so. depends on how the initial assessment is.
any thoughts?
