Audi Quattro S1

Hi Everyone,
Heres a question that had been brought up with myself on the old audi quattro s1 ralley car from the early 80's. To reduce turbo lag they used to have a fuel injector mounted on the exhaust side and would dump raw fuel into the exhaust manifold to keep turbo spinning. This was a crude system but it worked, essentially similar result to today electronics trickery. Has anyone out there given this a thought?
