Hey Andy,

Never seen a home-built jig. Every now and then the factory jig comes up on eBay.

My very first V-4 gearbox I took apart had a couple of obviously bad bearings in it. I replaced those myself, put it back together, lok-tited the shaft nuts, put the same shims back in the rear cover, used blue RTV everywhere, and put it back in my '73 Sonett. The car has been driven hard over the last 15 or 20 years, off and on. Other than regular gear oil changes (Redline MTL), that's all I've done. That gearbox is quiet and smooth shifting to this day. So it can be done in a simple fashion without a jig. And I probably got lucky.

Speaking of which, good luck finding a good used one. I've had a hard time finding a good one. Emphasis on good. Lots of them show up, but they all seem to be worn out. If you find one, take a few minutes and check the shaft nuts before installing it. And if you find TWO good gearboxes, I'll take one!
