Hey George,

So you have the starter off, right? You can check it on the floor of your shop.

There's three terminals on the starter.

1) A big one towards the outside that the battery wire connects to.
2) A big one towards the inside that has a big braid that goes inside the starter.
3) A small one that drives the solenoid.

The solenoid's job in life is to connect the two big terminals together, so that the battery is connected to the starter and it turns.

Here's what you can do....but be careful. I suggest on the FLOOR because when the starter turns, it can jump off the bench. Get a battery and jumper cables.

Check the solenoid alone:

Connect the (-) of the battery to the case of the starter.
Connect the (+) of the battery to terminal (3), the solenoid. You should hear a CLICK as the solenoid engages.

Check the starter alone:

Connect the (-) of the battery to the case of the starter.
Connect the (+) of the battery to the other jumper cable, and BRIEFLY touch connection (2) above. This bypasses the solenoid and the starter should turn over briskly. DON'T TOUCH THE CASE OF THE STARTER WITH THE POSITIVE TERMINAL OR YOU WILL BEGAN A COURSE IN WELDING!!!

Check BOTH the solenoid and the starter

Connect the (-) of the battery to the case of the starter.
Connect the (+) of the battery to terminal (1). This is your normal hookup in your car.
Now, gently take a jumper wire or a screw driver if you're brave, and BRIEFLY connect terminal (1) to terminal (3). The solenoid should engage and the starter should turn.

This is straight forward, but if you don't understand what I am describing, stop and think it through. You don't want to weld or blow up the battery!
