Bad pressure plate?? - clutch fork hitting press plate

We put the battery in last week and all the rear lights checked out but then we pulled the gas tank out because that gauge didn't work.
Today we put the battery back in and decided to crank the engie for the first time. The plugs were pulled and we put some WD-40 in the openings. The engine cranked easy and the oil pressure came up (we drained and refilled with cheap oil first).
What we found out is that the clutch fork was going out far enough to hit the pressure plate. I had to back the adjusting screw off pretty far so that it would not hit the body of the pressure plate. I can push the rod about about 1/2 inch before the throw out bearing touches the pressure plate. Maybe the pressure plate is broken and will not return the whole way, could be why the clutch is stuck.
Here is a pic of when the clutch slave is the whole way out. Make the clutch fork is bent? Seems from the pics to be the right distance back.
Any ideas to help? I'd hate to pull the engine and trans but this does not seem to make sense. It appears that the pressure plate is not returning fully to touch the pressure plate.
