So, I finally had a little time this evening to do some more investigation on my non-functioning speedometer/odometer. I was able to get an inch or two more slack on the speedometer cable from the engine compartment so I could get the gauge cluster out just enough to reach behind and undo the plastic connector holding the speedometer cable to the gauge and detach the cable. In the process, I pulled a few other connections loose on the back side of the speedometer.
One was a bulb, but the other was a cylindrical plastic connector with an inner metal sleeve and a short pin in the center bottom of the cylinder. Looking on the back of the speedometer, there were two round holes but they both looked like places for a bulb (there was nothing in either hole that would appear to connect to the inner sleeve or pin of the other connector). So...thinking maybe something had been connected incorrectly in the past, I got out the Sonett III Service Manual to check the wiring diagram. The diagram was so small I could hardly read the numbering, so I tried enlarging it on my copier, but it was still hard to make out what was what. So....I was hoping someone here has more specific information on those connections below. Here is what I think is what...(positioned relative to the front of the speedometer)
56A - blue - is the bulb for the high beam light at the bottom right of the speedometer
58b - green - is the bulb for the turn signal repeater light in the bottom middle of the speedometer
49p - yellow - is the bulb for the brake warning light at the bottom left of the speedometer
That mysterious cylindrical connector had two labeled wires connected to the back of it:
FB - brown
54i - red (oddly, this is the color on the '70 model chart, but
mine is a '71 model according to the VIN)
The only other opening/connector on the back of the speedometer, is a round hole that would be on the back at about the 3 o'clock position when viewed from the front, but, as I said, there did not seem to be anything in that hole that would make contact with the metal sleeve or pin inside the mystery connector. Anyone know what that hole is for? Another bulb, perhaps to light the speedometer gauge? So, I have one more hole and a connector that will fit, but not really connect to anything. (I did not disconnect any other wires from the other gauges.)
And, I did not have time to jack up the front end and turn the wheels to see if the speedometer cable is turning or not. (The end visible now in the opening on the dash does seem a little rounded off from square.) But my bigger concern is now even if I get the cable working, what to do with that connector with wires for FB and 54i.
