As has been said, all Sonett have (or had) freewheeling. It may have been "neutered" but it was there originally. Check on the floor near the center of the firewall. There will be a lever. Also if you look at the right side (passenger side) of the transmission, the connection is there.
It could also be the shift linkage. I know mine pops out of 1st and 3rd gears and I think the linkage needs to adjusted.It may need to be pulled forward. Do some searches here for "linkage" you may find some details about that.
