Hey, Dan!
Paul's suggestion of using a stethescope is a good idea. ..And do it soon.
You might have a bent pushrod or a valve out of adjustment, although you tend to hear them rattling more at idle.
I had a lot of valve train noise on a GMC pickup I used to own. My buddy Dave's brother bought it from me and they didn't make it to the highway before a valve spring broke.
It could be a piece of broken piston ring inside the combustion chamber. A friend of mine had that happen on a Volvo 122S after doing a valve job; drove it halfway back from New Jersey to Boston with that rattle.
If you can reach down inside the engine bay that far, grab the balance shaft pulley and try wiggling it around. If you can move it, you've got bad bearings. It helps to loosen or remove the belt before testing this.
