Check the bulletin board for my tale of bent pushrods! I just recently bought a '68 that was sitting for some time. I ran the engine briefly when I got it home, just to get the oil hot before I changed it. Later I took the valve covers off, and -oops! I would definitely take the valve covers off, and squirt some oil over the rocker/valves. Follow the other guys advice too. Although, personally I wouldn't wait for too long- who could? Parts are pretty reasonable for these engines, and they seem pretty strong too. So I wouldn't worry too much about ruining the engine. Just don't rev the engine right after start-up. One other thing. If it doesn't start, it's probably because of the gas. My car's gas gummed up the lines. I would try and drain it, and fill up with fresh stuff.
