"I think my '72 is running rich."
It may be, but what makes you think that? Without understanding the basis for your observation, I am hard pressed to know what kind of help to offer.
"Is it just the one screw on the carb that you turn to make the adjustment?"
If you have a stock carb there is only one screw that affects mixture. It only affects mixture at idle*. Are you running rich at idle or at cruising RPM or both or what? If rich at cruise, there are likely other carb problems causing that, which will not be cured by idle mixture adjustment.
"I am hesitant to mess with it because I have been told it is fussy."
Get the Haynes manual and follow the instructions carefully. It is not that hard, but misadjustment can cause serious operational problems and even engine damage in time. Ignition timing should be adjusted first, then idle speed, then idle mixture.
"I am not much of a mechanic but I do what I can. I have the factory manual but I just wanted any advice on a good way to go about it or how to tell when it's at a good fuel/air ratio."
Best way to tell is with an exhaust gas analyzer.
"I ould assume that when it's too rich you get black smoke out the tailpipe right?"
Yeah kinda. Black smoke out the tailpipe says way way way rich. Richer than optimum will not produce black smoke but will affect performance and mileage and emissions. Dialing in for correct mixture is not as simple as "no black smoke."
"I alsoassume that if it's too lean it will miss. Does that sound right?"
Yeah kinda, as above. Misfire can result from lean mixture or many other causes.
"Aso, I have a broken driving light (behind the grille). Is that a pretty standard size to get at an auto parts store or would I have to order it?"
Probably pretty standard, take the old one in and see. Most stores will not have any useful listing for cars that old, but the bulbs still exist.
*Mostly.
