There seems to be a lot of year-to-year variation on grill styles, and even some within years. On my '74 the grill is flat black, but when I was touching it up I found that under the black paint, there was 'chrome' plated onto the plastic on the edges of some of the bars. A few months ago in the Brit mag 'Classic & Sports Car' there was a Sonett feature that showed a car similar to mine with the same grill shape, but the bars had chrome edges, like on my car before it was painted over.
The article complained that the chrome grill was too gaudy, so maybe SAAB felt the same and started painting them over later in the year, or maybe they went with the flat-black look for the US and the chrome look in Europe. These are low-volume, mostly handbuilt cars, so it would have been easy to decide in midyear, 'Ja, Ole, dat chrome is yoost too much' and then get out the paint gun and 'restyle' all the remaining inventory...
