Thanks. I'll bet that's right. Now another paint question about the engine lid:

On earlier Sonetts, the lid was solid body color. On later ones ('73-'74, I think) the top part of the hood bulge was painted black.

Did the factory do this by priming the whole lid, then masking and painting the body-color and black parts separately? Or did they paint the whole thing in body color, then shoot the black part on top of that?

On my lid, the black came off quite easily, revealing the same blue as the rest of the lid. Under that, the same gray/blue/primer/gelcoat pattern as the rest of the lid.

So one guess is that this is as PaulW described -- somebody started out with a pre-'73, solid-color lid, and changed it to a color+black lid.

It's pretty easy imagining this happening at the factory -- the paint shop at Arlov has just finished a bunch of engine lids, and then somebody says "Uff da," (or whatever Finns say) "the #%&* stylists just decided the hump should be BLACK on top now," so they sand it a bit, shoot the whole thing with primer/surfacer, and start over. Or I guess the same thing could have happened at the US importer, or even a dealer. ("Hey, let's make this '72 into a '73!")

Anybody know the real scoop? I realize this is very trivial stuff -- but let's face it, if these cars were Ferraris, people would have written entire, exhaustively-researched books about this subject!
