Unless you're a stickler for total originality, just do it. Installation is very simple as long as you follow the directions and note carefully how the original system was hooked up, and once it's installed your engine still looks the same as it did before -- no external boxes or controllers.

There's no significant performance advantage vs. points on a stock or nearly-stock engine, but it does eliminate the need to periodically replace points, re-gap them, etc. I still check the timing occasionally, but it has never changed since putting on the Pertronix about four years ago.

And considering what a PITA it is to see the timing marks on a Sonett (you just about have to remove the engine lid to do a decent job of it) anything that cuts down on the need to do timing adjustments is a good thing!

Bits o' advice: make sure there isn't excess play in the distributor shaft or a sticky advance plate before installing; if your distributor is dodgy, the engine will run a little better with the Pertronix than with points, but you're not getting the full benefit out of the conversion. So, if the distro is suspect, get it rebuilt first.

Also, once you've put the Pertronix in, you won't be needing to pull off the distributor cap periodically to check/adjust/replace the points. But don't let that make you forget that you still need to keep up with the routine lubrication of the distributor mechanism!

Otherwise, this is just about a classic no-brainer decision. It makes the car easier to maintain and lets you spend less time tinkering and more time driving.
