There's an article on that other vsaab website which we're not allowed to mention here, which details some of the things you need to watch out for.

The mechanicals are very simple, rugged, and generally DIY friendly, but parts will be less widely available than for a 9000 because the cars are older and there never were many of them made (never more than about 2,200 per year, most years less.) There are some specialist suppliers who can get you almost anything you need, though -- check the classifieds on this site.

To give a quick take on what you need to look for: rust, rust, rust, rust and rust (sills, passenger and trunk floors, spring towers, and base of firewall are among the likely spots; floors and sills can be DIY replaced or patched if you're handy with a welder, but the others require pretty advanced fabrication skills); noisy or broken transaxle (can be rebuilt but requires special tools); worn timing gears and balance shaft bearings (hard to check, but try wiggling the crank pulley to see if there's any play) and brake/clutch hydraulics (any car that hasn't been running in several years probably will need to have all hydraulics flushed and possibly rebuilt.)
