Rebuild engine and transaxle in houston

I took apart my 74 Sonett III because of rust. The engine ran fine, the only isssue was when I had the phenolic balance shaft gear blow up on me and I had it replaced with steel. Some say that this could be a sign of a failing balance shaft bearing. Transmission wise, The clutch slips and I had to be very gentle putting the car into 2nd. Freewheel has been disabled, but I don't know how.

I should at the very least have the transaxle rebuilt since it is out of the car. I've looked at doing it myself, but i'm starting to chicken out. Is this something any competent local transmission shop can rebuild or do I need to find a specialist? Any recomendations for people to contact? (especially in southest Texas)

For the engine, I'm more torn. Part of me says replace the seals I can get to easily, adjust the valves and replace the carb. Part of me says, well the thing is out, you might as well do the whole shebang. Are there things that NEED to be done now while I have the engine out, before it becomes my daily driver? The engine seems straight forward, even though the manual sucks, I'm pretty confident that I could work my way through it if I had goals for certain things that I knew I needed to replace/check out.

I realize that ultimately, I have to decide where I want to go with this, but any experience you all have would help me out. Thanks.
