Get a voltmeter and some alligator clips. Open the hood. Set the meter so you can see it from in the car, set it to DC volts, clip one side of the meter to the big nut on the solenoid, and the other to ground. Then go in and watch the meter while trying to start the car. IF the meter shows no voltage, it's in the battery, the terminal connections, the starter switch, or the yellow wire to the starter. If the meter shows a high voltage, but doesn't fall due to being loaded, then the starter is not connecting. If the voltage does fall after jumping up, then the starter might just need to be whacked with a hammer a bit. The brushes might be getting old.
In about 100,000 miles of Vsaab driving, I've gone through two starter replacements and two ignition switch replacements. The switches usually tell you it's time to go by getting warmer--one day your key feels hot when taking it out of the switch. Starters can fail all at once, but often a good whack gets you home.
In any case, whacking the GD starter always feels good at times like these! Let us know how it goes.
