I restore old fiberglass bodied dune buggies, and the similar problem is prominent - particularly in the cars that had a rough life of off roading. The cracks appear most commonly when an extraneous force of one nature or another causes the gelcoat (the pretty looking shiny color on the outside) to separate from the fiberglass underneath. I have repaired a great deal of stress cracking by doing the following:
1) Grind the cracks completely out (down to good fiberglass), and sand around the area with 220 grit.
2) Clean the area with a good wax/dirt remover, and use a lightweight body filler of good quality (bondo lightweight filler does suffice) to fill the area slightly over the height of the original surface.
3) When it is set to the touch, use a file to roughly shape the repair.
4) Sand with 220g and a sanding block to smooth it out to the right contour. If you sand enough so that you can see a clear line between the filler and the old surface along an area where you ground, you likely sanded too far and will need to repeat from step 2. Feeling that it is smooth with your hand means nothing. To see the quality of the repair, spray some sandible primer over the area, and eye it in various light conditions. Not perfect? Go back to step 2.
5) If it all looks OK, use 400 grit to remove the primer and feather the repair to smoothness.
6) Paint. I recommend PPG or a similar line of paints, and the following procedure: Sealer, polyester primer (excellent for fiberglass - high build and very resistant to cracking from flexing), sand with 220g of finer, and a base/clear coat system with lots of coats of clear.
I did my personal buggy this way 5 years back - it was in TERRIBLE condition with lots of cracking, holes, etc. I drive it every chance I get, and to this day, the paint is flawless. Anyone with an air compressor and spray gun can do it, but don't skip on the prep work... that's where the shine comes from... not the time spent spraying with the gun.
Hope this helps!
Jeff
