...and then if it doesn't pan out, you have to go back and do a correct job of troubleshooting!
Anyway, let's see what we've got:
-- The car starts and SOME electrical items (e.g. lights) work, so there must be power in the system somewhere. Can you get hold of an ammeter to determine whether the alternator is actually charging?
Now my wild guess: One of the ground connections behind the instrument panel has come loose. Remember, the dash in a Sonett is fiberglass, so every electrical connection has to be grounded via a wire. I've had the experience of one of these grounds falling off: Some electrical accessories stopped working (the ones grounded through that wire) while others still worked (because they were grounded through a different wire.) Meanwhile, the alternator light stayed on faintly even though the alternator was charging, because the circuit was trying to find a ground THROUGH the alternator light!
You might also get similar symptoms if one of the chassis grounds has come loose: there's one back at the battery and another one at the engine block. I've never had that happen, though, so am not sure what the exact symptoms would be.
Anyway, you've got some tedious hours ahead of you with a test light and a wiring diagram, unless you get lucky and look under the dash and see a stray wire hanging down!
PS -- The fact that the speedo doesn't move is a coincidence, because it's operated mechanically (via a cable from the transaxle) rather than electrically. On the other hand, if the speedo cable popped loose behind the instrument -- dratted little plastic retainer may have cracked -- then it might have whipped around and knocked loose some wiring.
Good luck -- these can be real hair-pullers, so cross your fingers and hope for a lucky win!
