A little different info and the math looks better

The rims are from Jack Lawrence, but he requires only one set of donor soccerballs.
From looking at the Turbo Sonett, it appears that he cuts the center of a soccerball wheel from the rim, and then fits the center into a 6" wide chromed rim sourced elsewhere.
He advertises that this is for race use only (not street legal), and he mentions doing this to fit a 185/65 tire, which I understand many people do on the original soccerball or Cromodoro anyway.
So without knowing the cost of the new rims, but accepting your $600 figure for the set, I figure the total cost to be no more than half your guess, but I am startinjg with a $100 set of soccerballs, and the "high performance" 185/65sI've seen(such as Falken) look about $250-$300 installed. I suppose you could push to try to fit a 195 tire, but by then you are probably doing body work to prevent tire rubbing, and not as concerned about cost in the cost/performance trade off race.
Whether it is worth it is up to the buyer. Since Jack has sold some of them, it must be worth it to someone. Seeing it on the Sonett, I'd say it sure looked worth it. Unfortunately, I don't that a 6" wide rim will fit in the back of a 96. I think I'll call Jack just to be sure.
